• Matilda Morgan and Brian Nobes, the owners of a catering company whose truck hit a car after its brakes failed on the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge, killing an 11-year-old girl, have gone on trial for manslaughter. They deny the charge.
Michelle Shields from Rochester was on her way home from guide camp in August 1996 when the car she was in was crushed by an A-reg 7.5-tonne Ford Cargo carrying a burger bar and towing a fish and chip van. It was owned by SCM Caterers of Northampton. There was no brake fluid in one of the reservoirs, and no tachograph chart was in place.
