motorcars is one of the uses to which Barking Borough Council intends to put a special Sheppard Meiller container handling unit which it has just ordered from Sheppard Fabrications Ltd. The unit is basically a Type 6000 but incorporates longer-than-standard lifting arms to give a greater reach for handling cars, and two lifting points, one being for cars and a lower one for container handling.

It will carry 6-cu.-yd. containers when collecting refuse from multi-storey flats and will be able to lift up to 6 tons by chains or with a pallet when used to carry loading shovels and similar site equipment.

The equiPment is mounted on a Commer 7-ton 13-ft. 6-in.-wheelbase chassis fitted with a crew cab. The choice of this vehicle follows experiments by Barking B.C. last year with a small Type 4000 Meiller unit on a Karrier 5-ton chassis. This enabled the test team to establish that the easiest lifting method was by using chains through the front door windows of the car, but also showed that for large cars a longer platform and greater reach would be needed.
