Mr. Charles Bown, sales engineer of Merryweather and Sons Ltd., retired this week after being connected for 46 years with the design of fire engines and fire protection equipment. Mr. Bown joined Merryweather and Sons as an apprentice in 1919, where his father was works manager. In 1947 he was attached to' the drawing office to liaise between the designing staff and sales department. He took control of the drawing office in 1955, later being appointed sales engineer. Mr. D. J. Lyons, a chief scientific officer of the Ministry of Aviation, has been appointed director of the Road Research Laboratory in succession to Sir Waliam Glanville, who is to retire on March 31. Mr. Lyons, who is 48, will take up his duties on April 1. He joined the Royal Aircraft Establishment in 1937 and as head of the Ministry of Aviation's weapons department he has been responsible for the management of large-scale research programmes. . Mr. George B. Dryden, managing director of S.M.T. Sales and Service Co. Ltd., has been appointed also managing director of The Scottish Motor Traction Co. Ltd.

Mr. B. Griffiths, at present general manager of Crosville Motor Services Ltd., has been appointed a member of the Council of the Tilling Association Ltd. with effect from March 1, and consequently will resign from his position with Crosville. Mr. Griffiths started his career in 1925 with Gower Vanguard Motors Ltd. at Swansea. He became area manager of United Welsh Services Ltd. in 1934, on the company's formation, and general manager in 1946. In 1950 he was appointed director and general manager of that company and in 1960 was appointed to a similar position with Crosville.

New appointments in the engineering division of Leyland Motors Ltd., controlled by Mr. John McHugh, director and chief engineer, involve five senior engineers, Mr. Cyril MenneII, formerly vehicle design engineer, has been appointed chief designer (vehicles). Mr. J. Milloy becomes technical assistant (design) to the chief engineer, relinquishing his former duties as transmission design engineer to Mr. T. B. Platt, who was formerly design engineer (special projects). Mr. Eric Kay, formerly project engineer (prototype) has been appointed technical assistant (executive) to the chief engineer. Filling the new post of chief body engineer is Mr. J. McGowan, who was formerly presswork design engineer.

Mr. H. Southern, at present an inspector of the North Western Road Car Co. Ltd. at Altrincham, Cheshire, has been appointed divisional traffic superintendent (north) of the company, with effect from February 1. He will succeed Mr. A. M. Sedgley, who is to become assistant traffic manager of the City of Oxford Motor Services Ltd.

Mr. J. J. Brown, former national vicepresident of the Industrial Transport Association, has retired as general warehouse manager for the Nottingham depot of Courtauld's subsidiaries.

The Tilling Group announces that Mr. D. T. Searle, at present assistant engineer of Lincolnshire Road Car Co. Ltd., has been appointed chief engineer of Southern Vectis Omnibus Co. Ltd. with effect from March 1.

A director of Securicor Ltd, before taking office in the last Government as Secretary for Technical Co-operation, Mr. L. Robert Carr has now rejoined the Securicor board.

Mr. William F. Faulkner, Scammell Lorries Ltd. Spares manager, has retired after holding this post since he joined the company 46 years ago. His successor is Mr. Lewis J. Weedon, who joined Scammell in 1937.

Mr. T. R. Beady, assistant technical director of Eaton Axles Ltd., retired this week after 18 years with the company and 50 years in the motor industry. He joined Eaton Axles in 1946 after service with other companies that included Sunbeam, A.E.C., Guy and Tilling Stevens. Mr. Beady became chief engineer of Eaton Axles in 1950 and assistant technical director in 1962: Mr. M. G. Harding, at present British Omnibus Co. Ltd. district traffic superintendent, Gloucester. has been appointed divisional traffic superintendent (southern) to fill the vacancy created by Mr. F. E. Dark being appointed assistant traffic manager. Mr. R. S. Burnett, chief inspector (northern), has been amointed district traffic superintendent, Gloucester.

Mr. M. Dufty has been appointed managing director of K. F. Ward Ltd., a member of the B.S.R. Group. Mr. F.., E. Perks becomes an additional director and Mr. J. Mullis continues as sales manager. Mr. K. F. Ward and Mr. S. R. Ward, previously joint managing directors of K. F. Ward Ltd., are no longer associated with the company or the B.S.R. Group. Mr. David H. Stewart recently retired as sales director of Millburn Motors Ltd., Carlisle. Mr. Stewart joined Albion Motors before the First World War and was responsible for the sales of Albion passenger vehicles in Scotland between the wars. He left Albion Motors to form his own coach business in Carlisle in 1938 and joined Millburn Motors in 1945 in charge of the Carlisle branch.

Mr. John E. Clarke is to relinquish his post as managing director of Scotts of Nottingham Ltd., but is remaining on ihe board as chairman of the company. .Mr. Peter J. Clarke has been appointed as his successor.

After 10 years as general manager of the commercial vehicle depot of W. Mumford Ltd., Plymouth, Mr. Ronald Flory is leaving to become a managing director of a motor company in Dorking.

Mr. E. F. Whiffin, who has served on the board of Anglo-Amco (A. Blackford and Son Ltd.) since October, 1963, has now joined the company on a full-time basis and accepted the appointment as deputy managing director.

Mr. G. W. Barton has been appointed assistant manager (equipment and service) of the Castrol Group engineering division.

Mr. G. H. Allen has been appointed to the board of the Glacier Metal Co. Ltd., of Alperton, Middlesex, Mr. N. E. Wilcock has retired after 14 years as transport officer with Shipley (Yorkshire) Urban District Council. Before going to Shipley, Mr. Wilcock was with Bradford Corporation, for part of the time as transport officer with the city surveyor's department.

Mr. D. S. James has been appointed a principal executive assistant of London Transport as superintendent of the ticket machine works (road services).

The Minister of Transport has appointed Maj. Guy Knight and Mr. E. J. Peacock as members of the Transport Users' Consultative Committee for the South Eastern area. Maj. Knight is a member and past chairman of the Berkshire County branch of the National Farmers' Union. Mr. Peacock is managing director of Redland Transport Ltd., Reigate, Surrey.
