THE British commercial vehicle industry, says the S.M.M.T., last year held its position as the world's largest exporter of commercial vehicles, including p.s.v. Overseas sales in 1964 reached the record total of 168,606; home market sales totalled 246,705—an increase of 23,334 on 1963.
Cars, too, showed record production and export totals and the S.M.M.T.'s president, Mr. William Swallow, chairman and managing director of Vauxhall Motors commented: "The British motor industry's contribution to the country's balance of trade in 1964 amounted to the immense figure of £737m., or £2m. a day. Thus without this the visible trade deficit would be nearly 70 per cent greater than the present figure.
