S. and P. Brake Linings.

In the matter of brake lining, the vehicle manufacturer naturally pays particular attention to the obtaining of a lining which will be unaffected by heat or cold, damp, oil, grease, and, moreover, which will not become disintegrated through continual use. There are several makes of lining on the. market, but that of the woven wire and fabric construction appears to be finding much favour at the present time. We have recently had submitted to us two samples of this class of brake lining manufactured by Small and Parkes, Ltd., Hendham Vale Works, Manchester. Upon close examination and subjecting it to filing, the fabric, certainly appears to be capable of withstanding hard usage. The manufacturer claims that a particus lar advantage is that the impregnated yarn used in its manufacture will not fire. It has been supplied to many of the leading motorcar manufacturers and locomotive engineers throughout the country and is also much favoured by colliery proprietors for use on winding engines. Whenever a gradual yet strong and non-slipping sraking contact is required, this should prove a very

satisfactory lining medium. The material is subjected to considerable pressure in manufacture, and, as turned out, is extremely tough.

Upon being warmed, however, before it is required. to fit it in position, the fabric can Iss bent almost to any shape. Interested readers can be supplied with trial pieces for their approval.

David Brown's to Make Double Helical Gears.

We have been notifiZA by that well-known gear specialist, David Brown and Sons (Huddersfirld),. Ltd., Park Gear Works, Lockwood, that the concern has recently acquired the business and valuable patents, in connection with geae manufacture, of John Sunderland, Keighley. These patents cover the production of double helical gears by a special process the basis being that the teeth are generated from ;he rack principle. They are continuous ; their strength is nut. impaired, and the section is uniform for any pas ticular tooth module. The gears are generated from carefully hardened and ground cutters, and they are claimed to be quite accurate in finish, consequently giving very satisfactory running results. The cost and time taken to produce these double helical gears have, been considerably reduced on .account of the installation of high-class machine tools, and intending customers Neill find that their requirements can be handled with an absence of delay.

Carborundum It will no doubt be at once conceded that the automobile engineer has made very 'exacting demands on the manufacturer of abrasive materials. The many component parts which are now machined out of tough, high-tensile steels, and the quick repetition of work daily being turned out, call for the manufacture of abrasive materials of qualities whieh will not unduly heat or otherwise interfere with the life of the cutting tool when treated, and it is only a specialist of long experience in grinding media who is able to meet these requirements. The highly satisfactory results which that wellknown production, Carborundune affeeds is evidenced by its universal application Itfy engineers, and its consistent good quality is but one of its recommenda tionis. The Carborundum Co., Ltd., has recently erected new works and offices at Trafford Park, Manchester and has there laid down costly plant adequately to meet the increased demands for its pro auction.

All raw material will be received direct from Niagara Falls, and skilled men will be in charge throughout its preparation for the English market.

Atlas Cast-steel Road-wheels.

The considerable amount of favour which road wheels constructed of east-steel are meeting with at the present time is largely due to that great advance in the science of metallurgy, which •enables the steel specialist satisfactorily to produce mild castings of compa.ratively any shape and section.

Steel road wheels are now being fitted by moatmanufacturers of industrial machines; some users

faeour those built up of wrought steel, whilst others uilJ speeiky those of the cast-steel type. The Atlas Resilient Road Wheels Co., Vaughan Street, West Gorton, Manchester, are specialists in the latter form, and our illustration depicts two interesting examples of Atlas steel wheel construction.

The right-hand view is of a wheel cast with " Y " spokes, the brake drum being ‘cast integral with the hub. The left-hand view shows the latest type of

tubular spoke wheel, Which is so mucli in favour at the present time. These wheels are manufactured in "electric " steel of careful analysis, of which the

-special qualities, both as regards strength anti ductility, make it eminently suitable for such produc tions. The ultimate tensile strength of test pieces indicates 32 to :34 tons per sq. in. of net section, whilst the elongation is as high as 20 per cent. It is claimed that the special qualities of castings produced front " electric" steel are uniform soundness and toughness : at the same time, there is a certain amount of IT silieney maintained.

All productions of the Atlas Co. are machined to high limits Of accuracy, and as turned out the wheels are quite interchangeable.
