• NFC insists it is on target to end the financial year £95m in the black, despite a drop in profits for the 40 weeks to 13 July.
The transport giant's profits fell 5% to £68m, on turnover up £600,000 to £1.241m. Core businesses, including Exel Logistics, reported a 10% profit increase to £66.6m.
Contract business is helping Exel, as are "tough measures taken to reduce costs", says NFC. But the slump in truck rental and the housing market are hurting BRS and Pickfords.
