Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

NI Aberdeen-based Adam Middler Transport is quitting the haulage business after 30 years, blaming the recent fuel and VED hikes.

Owner Adam Middler says there are plenty of others who want to do the same, because they are constrained by financial commitments. "I don't have to sell but we have reached a stalemate," he says. "My UK customers are also being squeezed and cannot pass any savings on.

"The fuel and tax rises have knocked the feet from under us haulier boys," he adds. 'In all my 30 years I have never seen it so bad—and this could just be the start."

The company's fleet of 14 tractors, 20 trailers and 15 assorted vehicles will go under the hammer this Saturday, 1May.

• Regional council members of the Road Haulage Association met in Glasgow this week to discuss the state of the road haulage industry in Scotland.

Concern was expressed over a 223/4 increase in the presence of foreign vehicles since last year.
