• The prospect of a free-for-all in the letters market has been ruled out by the Government in a move that secures the jobs of thousands of postal drivers.
The decision, which results from the Government's review of the Post Office, is set to disappoint private parcels carriers wanting large sections of the letters market.
It has also become clear that early proposals to break up Royal Mail into regional and business sections will not come to fruition.
The lack of disturbance to Royal Mail's structure will mean the jobs of its 150,000 staff and the workload of its 27,000 vehicles should remain relatively intact.
However, the future ownership of Royal Mail and Parcelforce is still undecided—the Department of Trade and Industry is still deciding whether it has the political nerve to force through privatisation in the face of backbench MP opposition.
