GEA goes to MMC on gas analysers

• The Garage Equipment Association has submitted evidence to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission refuting allegations that gas analyser manufacturers are overcharging and excluding independent servicers from the market.
In February Sir Bryan Carsberg. director-general of Fair Trading, ordered an inquiry into allegations of restrictive practices in the servicing of exhaust gas testing equipment.
These analysers are used in MoT tests.
The GEA believes its submission will show the competitive nature of the equipment supply, maintenance and calibration market, which is worth £8.5m a year. E Roads and traffic minister Kenneth Carlisle hopes to reinstate the MoT smoke test later this year: it was suspended in February after reports that it was damaging some light diesels.
