Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

been bombarded with marketing messages from here, there and everywhere regarding Euro-4 and which technical solution is best.

"AdB lue or Add Nothing" vs"AdBlue and Add Value" sums up the debate as the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) and SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) camps have landed uppercuts, jabs and body blows.

To date there have been no knock-outs, falls or submissions so CM's mission was simple:cut through the claims and give operators the facts that will help them choose the right trucks at Euro-4.

And solo the test. All the truck manufacturers were invited to participate in this. the UK's biggest ever group test. Every maker bar Daf (which was unable to supply a truck with the required power and spec) threw their hats into the ring, eager to back up their marketing bravado.

Reflecting the UK market the test was divided into two classes, for 40 and 44-boners. The power requirements for each sector were clearly established, but that apart, the manufacturers were free to submit their chosen cabs, wheelbases and other details.

Test stipulations

The only stipulation we put on the test was that all components had to be available exfactory; all trucks were type approved for Euro-4: and the relevant MDs confirmed in writing that the vehicles matched their homologation documents. Our team of scrutineers monitored everything from tyre tread depth. through tyre pressure to power output at the wheels.

Naturally, meticulous time and fuel records were kept for the whole of the test.

Only Mercedes-Benz and Volvo entered trucks in both classes. The former entered an Axor in the 40-tonne class with an Act ms Lo try its luck among the 44-tonners; the Swedes entered an FM in the five-axle class and an FH in the top-weight class.

The remainder of the five-axle 40-tonne line-up comprised an Iveco Stralis and a Renault Premium: the MAN TGA and Scania R Series completed the 44-tonne race cardand they were the only EGR-equipped vehicles on test.

But that's enough of the preliminaries on to the main event...
