CAMBRIDGESHIRE TRANSPORT and warehousing company Knowles Transport is to open an 18.000m2 warehouse after extending its agreement with Premier Foods to distribute goods produced in East Anglia.

The firm is also waiting for a decision from its local planning authorities over another 18,000m' warehouse that it hopes to operate for the food firm, after the manufacturer decided to consolidate its canning operations in the East of England.

Knowles Transport's general manager, Ian Ramsay. reports that in January the Wisbech Roadways consortium. of which Knowles is a member with fellow hauliers Jack Richards and R Garn, extended its contract with Premier Foods. It now runs until 2011. Ramsay, who is chairman of Wisbech Roadways, says the set-up has been a terrific success since it began in 1998.

"It was quite an experiment to start with." he explains. "Three companies were bidding against the big providers. It's been wonderful to work with them and grow with them."

The latest it could hear about its planning application is November. Ramsay adds that rather than creating more driving jobs, the contract extension safeguards the 250 it has already.

We are exercising our minds about how to get productivity out of the fleets," he concludes. -There's double shifting going on, two men to a vehicle. It's about sweating the assets:
