• Two drivers employed by Philmar Transport, of Stalybridge, were ordered to pay £800 in fines and costs by the Trafford Magistrates after admitting driving excess hours and falsifying tachograph records.

Simon Leatherbanow, of Newlyn Drive, Bredbury, Stock port, pleaded guilty to three offences of falsification and one of

exceeding 41/2

hours driving without taking the required 45-minutes break. He was fined £500 with £50 costs Malcolm Grindrod, of Cheetham Hill Road, Dukinfield, pleaded guilty to one offence of falsification and one offence of exceeding the daily driving limit. He was fined£200 with 150 costs.

Prosecuting for the DoT, John Heaton said when Leatherbarrow's vehicle was stopped on 27 April, it was clear that the previous day's record was false. Further tachograph records for both men were subsequently seized and an examination revealed the other offences.

Defending, Cath Shuffiebottom said Leatherbarrow's marriage had been breaking up at the time and he had been anxious to get home at night, because that had been one of the things causing his domestic difficulties Grindrod had been running on to Worcester when he realised that he was not going to be able to get home before his time ran out, said Miss Shuffiebottom. He had attempted to park up at successive service areas on the motorway, first at Hilton Park and then at Keels, but the lorry parks were full,
