Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• As reported last week, VW displayed Transporters and Caravelles fitted with directinjection diesel engines at the Paris Show.

Two DI engines will be offered: a 2.5 litre five-cylinder and 1.9-litre four-cylinder. Variants of both engines are already used in both VW and Audi car ranges.

Producing 101hp (75kW) at 3,500rpm, the 2.5-litre engine offers 32% more power and a whopping 52% torque increase over the 2.4-litre indirect-injection engine. For car use the 1.9litre engine produces 90hp (67kW). Outputs for the Transporter version are not

known, but will probably be slightly less than in the car to improve fuel consumption.

Apart from the increased power and torque the new diesels should offer reduced fuel consumption. However, it is not certain if the DI engines will replace the current Transporter diesels. The cost of the electronically controlled DI engines is such that the IDI engines may be retained with the DI units offered as an option at extra cost when they are introduced in the UK next Spring.

• The Polo-based Caddy highcube van, first seen at Paris, will be launched in the UK market next April.
