• Supermarket giants Asda and Sainsbury have plans for new stores that are likely to create jobs in their in-house fleets as well as more work for subcontractors.
Sainsbury is particularly keen to get into the Northern Ireland market. It want to build five, new stores there, the first of which could open by the end of 1996 in Coleraine. The company is already talking to local suppliers about doubling orders in the area to £150m a year.
"This new development will mean more drivers jobs being created in our own distribution sector as well as contract work," says Sainsbury.
Ascla, Britain's fourth largest food retailer, says that it is also looking for sites in Britain and Northern Ireland.
It is to start building new stores after a three year break and plans to open six in the next year. The company says: "The knock-on effect of new stores may mean that we need more drivers for our distribution network."
