• Discussions are taking place between the Northern General Transport Co Ltd, Gateshead, and the.Transport and General Workers' Union concerning allegations by drivers of one-man buses that their buses are unsafe and equipment out-of-date.

Mr William Price, Northern traffic manager, denied that any of his buses were unsafe, but he said there had been talks with the drivers' representatives on a number of other matters, including complaints that cabs were cramped, that visibility from the cabs of some one-man buses was restricted, and that ticket machines for one-man buses were unsuitable.

A union official said troubles could partly be attributed to delay in getting parts because of a strike and also to a shortage of skilled fitters.
