'THE winner of this year's Express 1 Dairy Driver of the Year competilion was Mr. Norman Puig of Cricklewood. Another London driver, Mr. D. Colvin, of the Bromley depot, was the runner-up. This was the result last Sunday at the company's Victoria Road, Ruislip, depot, when 25 finalists of local rounds held at depots throughout the country, were put through four mammyring tests similar to those included in the National Lorry Driver competition.

All drivers who compete in the Express Dairy event have to have held a Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents certificate for four consecutive years. Coupled with the fact that three of the finalists were class winners at various Lorry Driver of the Year eliminating rounds up and down the country (S. Pudderfoot, who won his class at South Ruislip, J. Hughes, class winner at Maidstone, and R. Harrington, class winner at ,Woolwich), it goes without saying that the standard of driving was of the very highest.

The four tests, which were run off using three identical five-ton Thames Trader platform four-wheelers, consisted of a "width-judging" test, a kerbparking manoeuvre, a "snooker test" (similar to that recently introduced at Coventry but using coloured discs instead of balls) and a fairly complicated " reversing into a bay " test, in which the competitors were required to back into two bays within a very restricted area. This last test was run off against the clock and proved the downfall of many , of the drivers taking part.

Last year's winner, Mr. R. Keech a consistent class winner at Southend in the National 'competition and winner of the chairman's Award of Merit at Coventry earlier this month— acted as one of the three judges. Promotion to assistant transport officer forced him to nominate another driver in his place. His choice, D. Colvin, was the runner-up. The competition—this is the sixth year that Express Dairy have held an event of their own—was well organized. It took the 25 vehicles just over two-hours to complete the course.
