VIDENCE of "large-scale frauds and questionable practices" by some hauliers and drivers had been found as the result of an investigation by Birmingham. Weights and Measures Department, Mr. J. A. Birch, chief inspector of weights and measures, said last week.
A. section of his annual report, headed "Sand and Ballast," stated: "A particularly useful line of investigation pursued by the department during the past year or so has been the systematic analysis at builders' offices of large numbers of conveyance notes sent in from various sites and purporting to represent deliveries at those sites.
"This has revealed evidence of largescale frauds and questionable practices on the part of some haulage contractors and drivers, particularly in relation to shale and demolition materials, such as hardcore. Many notes have been found to refer to loads which never existed, while others have borne false particulars as to names of drivers, registration numbers of vehicles, etc,-'-circumstances which obviously throw doubt on the validity of the notes in other respects."
