Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Ingenious Device in which Plunger Acts as Valve and Injection is by Coil .Spring

A N interesting new fuel pump for oil 21Lengines has just been produced by the Scintilla Magneto Co., of Paris. This is a cam-operated plunger pump, in which an ingenious method of injection by accumulation is employed. Each pump cylinder is provided with an upper and a lower plunger. The lower one, which is moved directly by the cam, is provided with oil passages and acts as a valve, whilst the upper one performs the actual injection, under the influence of e coil spring.

The functioning of this pump may be clearly followed from the accompanying

diagrams. It will be seen that the charge of fuel taken in is trapped between the two plungers, the upper one of which is thereafter lifted through the medium of the oil. The overhead spring keeps the fuel in compression until the orifice leading to the injector is uncovered.

This system of accumulating the quantity of fuel required and maintaining it under pressure until the moment of injection would appear to offer certain advantages; in the first place, the injection pressure, being entirely independent of engine speed, remains constant at all times. Particularly exact control of small fuel deliveries is, moreover, rendered possible.

The maker claims that dribble at the end of lejection is eliminated, although this claim would appear rather more difficult to substantiate. The elimination of valves should make for reliability and long wear. Control of the quan

tity of fuel injected is by means of a longitudinal rack engaging with pinions which turn the lower plungers.

One of the strongest points in favour of the Scintilla pump is its remarkable simplicity, the parts of all the various models being interchangeable, whilst in the matter of mounting on existing oil engines, the pump conforms with normal types at present on the market.
