75 years ago 29 November 1927 "A very useful beginning was made with a new association of commercial motor owners on Wednesday last. The association, which is entirely confined to owners of steam vehicles or tractors, is to be called the Steam Transport Association. All general haulage work has been stopped by Sutton and Son of St Helens following the dismissal of about 170 drivers who went on unofficial strike. "Our London, St Helens and Manchester depots are at a standstill and will remain so indefinitely," a company spokesman said. Forty men in London were sacked last week following similar action against 130 of their colleagues in Manchester and at the company's St Helens headquarters. The men instituted a goslow some time ago because of grievances over hours, conditions and manning levels and then went on strike after the three-day suspension of a fitter.
