Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Following CM'S recent report on tanker prices (CM 31 Oct-6 Nov), Bernard Gilmont of the European Aluminium Association points out that the new ADR regs require a minimum tanker barrel thickness of 5mm for aluminium tanks with a diameter over 1,8m and 3mm for this size of tank in stainless steel.

On tanks of 1.8m diameter or less the minimum thicknesses are 4mm for aluminium and 2.5mm for stainless steel. CMis happy to set the record straight.

Gilmont adds that the weight advantages of aluminium compared with stainless steel will remain as long as new generation aluminium alloys are used; he is "confident" that such alloys "will continue to offer value for money' to fleet operators.
