Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The adoption of lsotrak hand-held terminals (HHTs) on trucks based at Exel's Bawtry depot has helped reduce fuel bills by 7.2% and boost vehicle efficiency, according to general manager Norman Coward.

Speaking at the recent IMechE seminar, improving Fleet Efficiency, Coward described how 32 vehicles from Bawtry were fitted with isotrak HHTs which use the GPS network to provide two-way communication between traffic office and drivers and provide real-time location and security tracking information, including proof of delivery data.

Exel ran a two-week pilot project with daily staff "focus meetings" to look at the issues raised by isotrak operation. Coward says the 7.2% fuel saving was achieved by reducing idling time, over-revving and excessive speeds.

lsotrak has also given Exel greater vehicle efficiency through real-time re-scheduling of vehicles and easier identification of backloading opportunities, as well as removing the need for mobile phones, he told the seminar.

Exel is leasing the lsotrak equipment and Coward said that the efficiency gains are currently covering the cost of the kit, although he added that the initial outlay was relatively high: "You must ensure this cost is recuperated—it's not something you'll get back in two weeks".
