• BOC Distribution Services' troubled contract services business is cutting nearly 300 jobs.

The closure of four sites and the reduction of operations at two others—starting this month (November) with Widnes in Cheshire and Thornbury in Hereford and Worcester— should make the contract services business profitable by early next year, says BOC Distribution Services managing director Peter Brinsden.

The cuts mean the loss of 290 jobs but should help BOC to compete in the "extremely tough" grocery distribution business, says Brinsden.

Overall, BOC Distribution Services saw a "better profit and some increase in turnover in a very competitive sector", according to financial results released last week for the year to 30 September 1996.

For Distribution Services and BOC's semiconductor manufacturing business there was a combined 28% increase in operating profit to £90.3 million on a turnover up 18% to £699 million.

From next month the group will split its results, showing clearly how each of its businesses is performing.
