Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

NNOUNCED QUIETLY at the me of the 1980 Motor Show, re Detroit Diesel Fuel Pincher 8 engine has not received a reat deal of publicity since ren. GRAHAM MONTGOMERIE :ports.

I have just had the opportunity I trying such an engine in a odge G16 tipper where it relaced a Perkins T6.354 and can sport that it pulls well iroughout the speed range and a quiet engine.

The Fuel Pincher has a capaty of 8.2 litres (500 cuin) and as designed for the US Class 6 iarket to replace the existing wen litre (427cuin) Chevrolet etrol engine.

In contrast to previous Detroit iesel practice, the Fuel Pincher a four-stroke although the )mpany was at pains to point Jt that this does not necessarily lean that the two-stroke philo)phy is on the way out.

The engine has been available 120kW (160bhp) naturally asrated form since last year and this has been added a turbolarged version which gives 50kW (200bhp).

Both these engines are rated 2,800rpm with the need to re place petrol engines in the USA being the reason for the comparatively high engine speed.

In the 160 hp version, the Fuel Pincher has a dry weight of 497kg (10961b).

The Dodge conversion for J. S. Cowley has been carried out with no frame alterations or changes to the gearbox and axle.

Starting from rest with the Dodge fully laden to 16 tons, second gear was perfectly adequate and the punch in the midrange gears made it an easy vehicle to drive.

The maximum torque of the Fuel Pincher is 475Nm (350 lbft) at 1,200rpm although the absence of a rev counter on the Dodge made it impossible to check on the usable engine speed range.

In spite of the notable lack of publicity given to the engine, Detroit Diesel is hopeful of attracting a lot of operator interest with a subsequent possibility of becoming an on-line option with the chassis manufacturers.
