AT A HEARING at Maidstone yesterday Gillingham Borough Council were expected to oppose the renewal of an 0-licence by Maylen Storage and Warehousing Ltd, a long-established co m pan y operating from a site at Wigmore, on the outskirts of Gillingham.
It is understood that the council objects to the size of Maylen's fleet-33 vehicles and 36 trailers—in relation to the depot area.
A meeting of Maylen's staff and management on November 16 expressed deep resentment at the council's attitude and the local management was supported in claiming that any unemployment caused by the council's action should be fully corn pensated for the full five years of the threatened 0licence validity.
It is understood that the council has given planning permission for 28 houses to be built opposite the Maylen Depot. The council's plans for an alternative site—if the Maylen premises are held to be unsuitable—may be spelt out at the enquiry.
