As far as Scania is concerned — and West Pennine Trucks' Stuart Wolstenholme suspects it is also true of other marques — an increasing number of customers appear to be looking for tractor units built to fleet specifications. "It's the return of the gaffer's motor," he notes.
"Buyers seem increasingly happy to take cheaper ex-fleet trucks — standard R-cabs with 420hp engines, which used to be slow sellers — and I think that's true across the market.
"I suspect they're not that worried about how the drivers will react, because they know they can recruit replacements easily in the current economic climate," he continues, "There isn't the driver shortage that there used to be, although good drivers are, of course, still hard to come by."
