will begin on 29 June between Deanside Terminal in Glasgow and Willesden in North London.
The service, which carries standard road trailers on specially designed rail wagons, could eventually be ex tended to run to the Continent via the Channel Tunnel. It is operated by EWS Railways, which says that so far Parcelforce is the only confirmed user of the service, using two prototype Eurospine wagons— but there will be berths for other operators to use.
EWS is also buying 20 Eurospine units, each capable of carrying four trailers or boxes, to give a maximum capacity of 80 trailer/box berths.
Freightliner plans to launch its own piggyback trials in June between Merseyside and Tilbury. It will spend £10m on piggyback trailers.
