THE GOODS vehicle population increased by one per cent last year to 1.66m, after falling by similar amounts in 1980 and 1981.

But, according to Department of Transport statistics, the increase was confined to vehicles of less than 1.5 tons unladen, where the number grew by two per cent to 1.17m. There was a four per cent fall in the number of 1.5 to three ton unladen vehicles, and one per cent in heavier weight vehicles.

There was a one per cent increase in the number of farmers' goods vehicles, from 85,000 to 86,000.
