FEWER commercial vehicles were sold in the United Kingdom during April this year compared with the same period last year and British vehicles obtained a smaller share of the market.

This was revealed in an assessment of new commercial vehicle registrations for April issued this week by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Ltd.

Although there was a fractional improvement in commercial vehicles sales during the month when compared with March sales—from 16,390 to 16,932—with British vehicles securing 87.06 per cent of the market compared with 87.03 in the previous month, both aspects suffered sharp reductions compared with the previous year's results.

In aggregate, 64,282 vehicles were sold of which 87.25 per cent were British in the first four months of 1976 compared with 74,727-86.67 per cent British—in the comparable period last year, Ford took over the leadership from British Leyland with Bedford and Chrysler following. Volkswagen was the leading importer followed by Datsun, Chrysler (France) and Toyota.
