old-timers by David Lowe

• Several "old-timers" had a disappointing time at the Newark LDoY round on Sunday, and a number of classes were won by drivers competing for the first time.

S. Taylor, of A. B. Gibson Ltd, was looking for his seventh consecutive win in Class F and would have achieved it easily but for losing many points on the Highway Code section. Ironically, one of his colleagues, R. Spendlove, entering for the first time, won Class D, much to his surprise, with the 'sixth lowest score of the day—a creditable performance among 123 entries

A similar fate to that of Taylor befell W. Jerrard, of Shell-Mex and BP Ltd, competing in Class H and hoping to get to Bramcote for a fifth time. He performed remarkably well on the manoeuvring tests but, losing many points on the road route, dropped to third place in the class.

Test two took a heavy toll among . competitors in Classes A and B. No entrant in the former completed the test correctly and only very few in Class B were successful on this test. The result was very high penalties for many. In fact, the winner in Class A lost 376 points.

Scores were generally on the high side, particularly on the road route and Highway Code sections, but H. Wragg of National Carriers put up one of the best performances of the day to win Class E with only 118 penalties.

H. Wragg who won Class E for NCL was overall winner after a run-off in identical vehicles between all class winners on test three.
