Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Many of the four-wheeled artic tractors built by ERF Ltd are now being fitted with 7im instead of 6in.-wide front brakes. The width increase comes in a change from a Girling to a Kirkstall brake assembly, as a rationalization move following the adoption of the pressed-steel cased D10-2-BH Kirkstall driving axle. The rear foundation brakes are now Kirkstall S-cam assemblies in place of the former Girling FCSS units, although the dimensions remain unchanged at 15 .Sin. by Sin.

Another major change to the specification of ERF models is the inclusion of a fire retardant additive in the polyester resin used for the moulded LV cab panels. The company points out that non-firescreened chassis can now be modified for tanker use to meet petroleum regulations, without changing the basic cab.

Because of the high imposed front-axle weight on Cummins-engined ERFs, compared with Gardner-powered models, a higher-capacity steering gear is now being fitted when a Cummins engine is specified. It is a Burman SF0.2750 assembly, with a ratio of 30.8 to 1, and replaces the Adwest 861 unit fitted previously. At the same time, the axle-spring clamping arrangements have been modified, to reduce the possibility of spring movement relative to the axle and to ensure that the design castor angle is maintained. The change involves a move to cast clamping plates with U-bolts.

• When the survey on reflective rear marker plates for commercial vehicles was published in CM April 9 Intertruck Ltd had not received final approval from the British Standards Institution for the product that this company is marketing. We have now been advised by the company that final BS approval has been received.
