The first new Leyland but to join the Sunderland Corporation Transport fleet since 1941 is this Marshall-bodied Panther Cub, one of three being delivered, and designed for one-man operation.

THE latest buses to be introduced by Sunderland Corporation Transport in I its eflorts to find the ideal single-decker (The Cothmercial Motor, October 16, 1964) are now being delivered. With the introduction of the new vehicles, four different makes of single-decker will be employed in Sunderland, the new buses being Leyland Panther Cubs with 45-seat, front-entrance, central-exit bodies by Marshall of Cambridge (Engineering) Ltd.

Panther Cub chassis were chosen by Sunderland Corporation to provide the advantages of a low front entrance which stem from the use of a rear, underfloor engine. The new buses have Leyland 0.400 engines and Pneumocyclic gearboxes, and are the first new Leyland buses to be introduced in the town since 1941.

A low entrance platform leads to a shallow step. beyond which the floor ramps gradually to the rear of the buses. Two shallow steps are provided at the central exit. Seats in the rear part of the saloon are on a raised platform, to provide transverse seating, facing seats being fitted over the front wheel arches. The floor arrangement is probably the neatest to be fitted so far on a rearunderfloor-engined single-decker, apart from the Daimler Roadliner.

In other respects the new single-deckers follow closely the standard specification employed by SCT for this type of vehicle, including the: use of an attractive interior decor. Due to the low floor line in relation to a high ceiling, however, the longitudinal handrails fitted appear to be more in the nature of ornament than of practical value, although straps are to be fitted in way of the bench seats and some stanchions are provided.
