DEN ATION AL IZATION of road haulage has accelerated the growth of the privately owned Hill group. This comprises Hill and Sons (Batley and Denmead), Ltd., BotIey, Southampton, F. Seaward, Ltd., Percy and Son Neon Stoke), Ltd., and B. Webb and Sons (Marchwood), Ltd.

At the end of the war the Hill concern had about 20 vehicles. Later, the Seaward, Percy and Webb organizations were acquired, and when denationalization began the group fleet totalled about 50 prime movers, 30 interchangeable semi-trailers and a number of independent trailers. .

Earlier this year Hill's bought two vehicles from British Road Services, and this week it was reported that another 11 had been acquired by Mr. .I. A. Hill, managing director of the group. They are -being distributed among the various companies and will operate as far north as Manchester.

SCOTLAND

Isaac 13arrie (Transport), Ltd., 365 Dalmamock Road, Glasgow, S.L, whose purchase of two vehicles was reported in The Commercial Motor on March 5, have been granted special A licences for six vehicles (26 tons). Special A licences have also been granted to Munro's Transport (Aberdeen), Ltd., Aberdeen, for four vehicles (151 tons) in addition to the two reported on April 30: A, Smith (Darvel), Ltd., Darvel, 12 vehicles (441 tons); Mr. William Cowan, Falkirk, six (191 tons); Fraser Bros.' Contractors (Greenock), Ltd., Greenock, four (111 tons); Mr. George Aitken, Laurencekirk, four (12 tons); W.M. Transport Co., lnverkeithing, three vehicles and a semitrailer (91 tons); Messrs. Thomas Todd and Son, Coupar Angus, three (101 tons); Mr. Frederick P. Cheyne, Kintore, three (91 tons); Lawson Bros. (Kirkintilloch), Ltd., Kirkintilloch, three vehicles and two trailers (201 tons); Messrs. John Kerr and Sons, Irvine, three vehicles (31 tons); Mr. Alexander Myles, Anstruther, two (6 tons), based at Leven; Mr. Andrew MacIver, Inverness, one vehicle (3f tons) and a I-ton container; Messrs. James and Jean Kemp, Leslie, one vehicle (3 tons).

NORTH-EAST Berwick, Tyneside, Edinburgh and Glasgow will again be served by Messrs. J Whillis and Sons, Coxons Lane Garage, Berwick-on-Tweed, who have returned to the field with 14 ex-B.R.S. vehicles. Their acquisition comprises five Bedford 6tanners, four Thornycroft 6-tanners, three Austin 6-tonners, an A.E.C. 7-tonner and a Bedford 3-tonner.

Trunk services between the Tyne, Wear and Humber ports, originally started in 1929, are to be redeveloped by F. Short and Sons, Ltd.. Maritime Buildings, King Street, Neweastle-on-Tyne, 1, who lost all their vehicles on nationalization. They have acquired 10 Bedfords and Seddons (53 tons) from Hull, and a Thornycroft (6 tons) from Gateshead-on-Tyne. The Thornycroft is now operating from the

1128 company's depot at Battlehouse Street, St. Peters, Newcastle, and the others are stationed at the Hull terminus at 113-121 Oxford Street.

Among other places which F. Short and Sons, Ltd, intend to serve are Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield and Grimsby. Messrs, B. M. English and Son, East Rainton, Co. Durham, have bought a Bedford I,300-cu.-ft, pantechnicon from the B.R.S. depot at Cullercoats, Whitley Bay. It will be used to carry new furniture.

NORTH-WEST

Three Atkinson 12-tonners purchased by Messrs. Phibbs Transport, Highway Garage, Manchester Road, Knutsford, are to be used mainly to serve Manchester, Stoke-on-Trent and Liverpool, although longer hauls will be undertaken. J. A. Phibbs, Ltd., operating from the same address, already run 10 vehicles.

Two pre-nationalization hauliers who have returned to the field are E. Broadbent, Ltd., 19 Wrigley Head, Failsworth, Manchester, and Mr. J. E. Stanley, Osborne Cottage, Block Lane, Chadderton, near Oldham. An Atkinson 8-tanner and an Atkinson 6-tonner have been taken over from the Redditch, Worcs, depot of B.R.S. by E. Broadbent, Ltd., who already operate seven vehicles.

Mr. Stanley is starting from scratch with the two contract vehicles he has acquired from the B.R.S. group at Temperance Street, Manchester. They are an E.R.F. 8-tanner and a Thornycroft 7-tanner, and will be used on a Manchester and Liverpool service.

Runcorn Transport Services (Messrs. A. and W. Wood), 34 Stanley Street, Runcorn, have acquired two more vehicles and a trailer (121 tons). These are additional to the 14 vehicles and two trailers, the purchase of which was reported on March 19.

The North-Western Authority has also granted special A licences to: Mr. Henry Parker, 10-18 Victoria Street, Liverpool, 2, for five vehicles (161 tons), Marston Motors, Ltd., 10 Marston Street, Liverpool, 6, two t6 tons); M. A. Keenan and Sons, Ltd., 6 Fazackerley Street, Liverpool, 3, two (61 tons) based at 16-18 Romiley Street, Liverpool, 6; Davies and Bennett (Haulage), Ltd., 34-38 Chatham Street, Liverpool, 7, two (6 tons); Mr. L. Gleave, Holly Bank Audlem, near Crewe, two (61 tons); Messrs. J. A. Williams and Son, 44 Mill Road, Liverpool, 6, one (31 tons); and Mr. William Pollard, 10 Grinishaw Lane, Ormskirk, one (5 tons) based at Black Horse Farm, Bursecnigh.

YORKSHIRE

One of four vehicles acquired by Denton Coaches, Ltd., Lotigroyd Bridge, Huddersfield, has been assigned to Rogers Bros. (Haulage), Ltd., Rookery Garage, Moldgreen. Huddersfield, and two to Mr. J. Wood, Fair Street Garage, Lockwood, Huddersfield. The Commercial Motor reported on April 9 that one of two vehicles bought by Rogers Bros. had been assigned to Denton Coaches.

Norman Jowett, Ltd„ Central Garage, Stansfield Road, Todmorden, has bought two vehicles in addition to the one reported on March 26. Messrs. Edwards of Hull, 295-297 Wincolmlee, Hull, have been successful with another tender for two vehicles. As early as January they had purchased two vehicles from the B.T.C.

Other acquisitions reported in the Yorkshire area this week are: Kingston Haulage Co., Ltd., 25 Queen Street, Hull, five vehicles; J. Dowker (Sheffield), Ltd., Ivy House Farm, The Dale, Sheffield, 8, four; Mr. L. Green, 74 Broad Street, Parkgate, near Rotherham, four, assigned to L. Green (Haulage), Ltd., of the same address; Pontefract Bros. (Haulage), Ltd., Park.head Garage, Holmfirth, four; Mr. R. Smith, "Jasmine," Moor Lane, Strensall, York, two; Mr. J. L. Dunn, 22 Market Place, Hull, two; and Mr. J. C. Ashworth, Hill Top Garage, Merton, Bradford, one vehicle.

WEST MIDLANDS Special A licences have been granted to Mr. T. G. MeGawn, 33 Castlehill Road, Ayr, for two vehicles (121 tons) based at Mickleover Road, Ward End, Birmingham; Mr. J. A. Swift (The Swift Way), }lollies Farm, Over Whitacre, Coleshill, two (51 tons); and Mr. S. Dakin, Hilstan, Walsall Road, Great Wyrley, Walsall, one vehicle (31 tons).

EAST MIDLANDS Unit 1902, comprising three vehicles, has been purchased by Mr. J. T. Hunt, 76 Newg.ate Street, Worksop. They have been assigned to J. T. Hunt (Worksop), Ltd.

One of three vehicles in unit 1450, acquired by Mr. L. Hair, Wressle, Brigg, has been assigned to Messrs. Wrights Haulage, Glover Road, Scunthorpe.

EASTERN COUNTIES

A Colchester unit (1772), comprising three vehicles with an unladen weight of 7 tons, has gone to T. and J. Kidner, Ltd., Brampton, Beccles.

Special A licences have been granted by the Eastern Licensing Authority to the following:—Mr. G. Parker, Station Road, Surfleet, Lines, three vehicles (11/tons), and Mr. A. W. Darkins, Trowel House, Oxborough Road, Stoke Ferry, Norfolk, one vehicle (21 tons).

WESTERN AREA Bristol unit 1167, comprising four vehicles (two of which are oilers) with an unladen weight of 11 tons, has been taken over by Mr. A. R. Bird, Badminton Road, Downend, Bristol.

SOUTH WALES Services from South Wales to London, the Midlands and the north are to be operated by two Commer 7-tanners bought by Mr. Emlyn Evans, " Pinecrest," Macsderwen Crescent, Pontypool, Mon.

Mr. Evans hopes to build 'as successful an undertaking as was acquired from me nearly five years ago," For more than four years he was in charge of traffic at the Pontypool depot of B.R.S.

The South Wales Licensing Authority has granted special A licences to S. Harfoot and Sons, Ltd., Castleland Street, Barry Dock, Glam, for five vehicles (161 tons), two of which have been assigned to Messrs, Woodham Bros., 54a Thompson Street, Barry, and two to Messrs. King's Transport, Morel Street, Barry Dock.

SOUTHERN AREA

An assortment of 11 vehicles, purchased from B.R.S. by Mr. J. A. Hill, "Bottings," Curdridge, Botley, Southampton, is to be assigned to the companies connected with the road transport group operated by Hill and Sons (Staley and Denmead), Ltd. The vehicles comprise a Dennis 5-ton pantechnicon, a Morris-Commercial 5-tanner, a Dodge 5-tanner, two A.E.C. 71-tonners, a Dennis 71-tonner, an Albion 71-tonner, and a Thornycroft, Vulcan and a Leyland, all or which are 6-tonners.

Although to be operated mainly on general services to London, Bristol, -Birmingham and Manchester, the vehicles will be available for use throughout the United Kingdom.

A special A licence has been issued by the South-Eastern Licensing Authority to Victory Transport, Ltd., Old Mill Quay, Northam. Southampton, for four vehicles (131 tons) and two 2-ton trailers. LONDON AND HOME COUNTIES A daily service to The Eastern Counties, a well as one for frpit traffic from the .ondon docks, wharves and railheads to -ondon markets, is being operated with 12 x-B.R.S. vehicles run by Recce Bros. transport, Ltd., 36 Tavistock Street, -ondon, W.C.2. The vehicles are six 1edfords (10-tonners and 6-tonners), five )odge 6-tonners and a Seddon 7-tonner_ Three Bedford 8-ton articulated units iought by Mr. R. J. B. Neale, Rainham toad South, Dagenham, Essex, are to be eplaccd by Ford oilers which will be used o improve their existing service to the lirmingham and Manchester areas. General goods will he carried to all ,arts of the United Kingdom by the three

vehicles bought by Chas. II. Ward and Co., Ltd., Plantation .House, Mincing Lane, London, E.C.3, This purchase compriscd Austin 6-tonners, The vehicles will be based at Tannery Lane, Send, Surrey.

A Commer Q4 purchased by Patten's Transport, Ltd., Ramsden Heath, Billericay, Essex, has been replaced by a new vehicle. This company intend to serve their pie-nationalization customers.

A vehicle of 7 tons 2 cwt., for which the Metropolitan Licensing Authority has granted a special A licence to Mr. F. Taylor, 37 Oliver Close, London, E.10, has been assigned by Bercsford Transport, Ltd„ High Street, Tunstall, Stoke-onTrent, whose purchase was reported in The Commercial Motor on May 14.

Two Austin 5-6-tonners bought by Messrs. T. S. and 15. L Bell, 160 High Street, Rainham, Kent, will be used on general haulage throughout •the country, as well as on the distribution of fruit, in which they have specialized for many years. The South Eastern Licensing Authority has issued special A licences to Messrs. Coulling Bros., Warren House, Sandway, Lenham, Kent, for two vehicles (6 tons), and Charles Hewitt, Ltd., 5a Rhodaus Town, Canterbury, for one vehicle (3 tons). A special A.. licence has been granted by the Eastern Licensing Authority to Deventsh, Ltd., Station Garage, Rayleigh, Essex, for two vehicles (7 tons) assigned to Yewed, Ltd., 42 Albert Road.
