GUEST of honour at a luncheon given by the Metropolitan Area of the Road Haulage Association, last Tuesday, was Brig. R. J. 0. Dowse, C.B.E., M.I.Mech.E., M Inst.T. The new chairman of the Area, M r. C. W IL Sparrow, presided.
Proposing the toast to Brig. Dowse, Mr. Sparrow said that this was a good opportunity of introducing himself, as well as other new members of the Metropolitan Committee. He hoped that the Licensing Authority and his staff would continue to serve the industry with their usual impartiality and justice. The Area has kept in close contact with the Authority.
Brig. Dowse said that all matters before him would be dealt with as fairly as lay in his power. He appreciated the co-operation of the R.H.A., and was particularly struck by the fair way in which established hauliers treated new applicants.
The toast of the R.H.A. was given by Mr. G. W. Harris, M.B.E., and in reply, Mr. B. G. Turner mentioned that the R.H.A. now.had an annual income of over £95,000, whilst its membership was about 18.500.
SAFETY WITH PAY
ASERIES of 12 cartoons humor ously illustrating road-safety maxims, has been printed on cards measuring 4 ins. by 3 ins., which are being inserted in the pay packets of the transport drivers of T. Wall and Sons, Ltd. A different card is being issued each week. This innovation has been introduced to coincide with the partial restoration of the basic petrol ration and the increase in traffic that is likely to accompany it.
DRIVERS' LOGS A "FARCE"
DRIVERS' log books were a "farce," said Mr. H. L Jeffery, the new chairman of the Devon and Cornwall area of the Traders' Road Transport Association, at a meeting at Plymouth.
He also complained of the division of the control of fuel supplies by the introduction of the Board of Trade into the situation.
Attention was also drawn to the disparity between fines imposed on first offenders against the regulations covering "Halt" signs. It was stated that fines of 5s. were exacted at Plymouth and £1 at Launceston.
Mr. Jeffery succeeded Mr. J. Adams Brown, who resigned chairmanship because of ill-health. Mr. J. R. Reed was appointed vice-chairman.
THE TROJAN ENGINE
TN the tables of specifications pubI fished in "The Commercial Motor!' on April 30, the Trojan engine was referred to as having two pumping cylinders and two power cylinders. Actually, there are four cylinder bores and four pistons in the power block, each pair of cylinders having a common combustioh head.
