A BONUS scheme to encourage safe rtdriving of road haulage vehicles was mentioned at the May meeting of the Industrial Transport Association's Leeds branch.

Mr. J. F. Archbold, the well-known Leeds haulier, said that Lloyd's was considering the arrangement, which, if adopted. would be administered by a bureau set up by insurance companies and road haulage operators. To drivers with the required safe-driving record, who paid a registration fee of 5s.. the bureau would issue certificates entitling the holder to extra pay of El per week. and enabling his employer to obtain an insurance rebate.

Accidents involving registered drivers would have to be reported to the bureau, and if a driver were found to he blameworthy, his certificate and its financial advantages would. be withdrawn.

The scheme, said Mr. Archbold, had been approved by interested trade unions, to which it was submitted. He felt its adoption would result in a large reduction in road casualties and in damage to vehicles and the goods the carried.

Mr. R. Stockdale suggested that labour troubles might arise through cases in which the El a week extra pay was withdrawn. He mentioned that when a move was made recently to withdraw an incentive bonus to Birkenhead ship-repair workers, on the ground that the incentive was not fulfilling its. object, the ship-repairing companies were faced with a strike of 8.000 workers.
