ALTHOUGH the wages committee's report has, in the main, met with a large measure of approval among employers in the Yorkshire Area, disagreement with the recommendation that, in the first place, regard should be had to the present National Board's decisions, is voiced in a resolution passed by the employers' panel of the Yorkshire Joint Conciliation Board.

The resolution states: "Practical experience has proved that the decisions of the National Board should not be taken into consideration at all, chiefly because the Board was not representative of the industry . . . . Yorkshire, the largest county in England, had no direct representation."

Reference to the point covered by the resolution was made by Mr. Charles Holdsworth, chairman of the Yorkshire employers' panel and of the Yorkshire Board, at a meeting, on Monday, of the transport section of Bradford Chamber of Trade. Mr. Holdsworth remarked that the new Central Board should make a completely fresh start in the consideration of wages and working conditions. It should base its decisions on the actual position of the road-transport industry at the present time, and then build up towards the higher standard which was desired.

He expressed satisfaction with the Government committee's recommendation that Scotland should come within the purview of the Central Board. As to the position of the owner-driver, Mr. Holdsworth emphatically disagreed with Mr. Ernest fievin's view that this type of operator should be eliminated.

Mr. Fred Pickering, hon. secretary of Bradford and District Commercial Vehicle Owners Federation, welcomed the committee's recommendation that the Central Board should include three independent members who had no connection with transport.
