"There were 1,000 registered

bidders, and at one point there was an eight-mile queue of cars trying to get in," says Chris Wright, managing director of Commercial Vehicle Auctions, which organised the Carlisle sale.

There were 350 lots, and the sta of the show was without doubt Scania 4 Series Pii4 360 8x4 rigit with a hook-lift. Registered b September 2001, it fetched . whopping £67,000.

A W-plated, 2000 vintage Foden Alpha 8x4 with a hook-lif went for £42,000. So far as 8x, tippers were concerned, a Scania , Series Pii4 360, 1997 on a P plate fetched £20,000. A later exam ple-1998 on an R—was bough for £24,000. An ERF ECSii SL tipper, 2001 on a Y, was sold fo L5o,000.

Several 1999 Scania 4 Serie R124 400 6x2 tractors came unde the hammer, all S-registered, an made from £27,500 to £29,250. Turning to tipper trailers, a 996 Fniehauf triaxle with a 5703 tody was sold for £12,750, while wo Stas 72yd3 triaxle tippers datrig back to 1997 fetched £17,000 iach. A 65yd3 Fruehauf' from 999 was bought for £20,750. There was enthusiastic bidding or 7.5-tonners, many of which iad been used on decontaminaion work. An R-reg 1998 MAN ..2000 8.163 tipper was bought Or £8.000, while a selection of Iveco 75E15 tippers of the same age and registration sold for around £10,700,

Everything that had been used to move carcasses was sold with a DEFRA (Department for the Environment, Regions. and Rural Affairs) certificate stating it had been properly cleaned. There is, however, nothing to prevent buyers from subsequently reselling the vehicles, with no mention of their use in the cull.
