IIII AN eight-leggers were always solid performers but when the ageing F90s were finally put out to pasture in the spring of 1997, the Fz000 replacements came with a more powerful )7-litre straight-six Euro-2 engine hooked up iaton's RTSO 16-speed range-change box. 'hese changes helped to nudge MAN' s marshare into double figures, and with the to-3 TG-A 8x4s due here next year, the tire's looking rosy.

)f course there will still be plenty of Euro-2 Doos around, with a well deserved reputari for being ultra-dependable trucks. But that ability is dependent on regular maintenance / keen vehicle inspectors.

VEHICLE OWNER: LEEDALE

111 The vehicle used here was shown to us courtesy of its owner Ripley, Derbyshire-based Leedale. This earthmoving and plant-hire specialist runs a fleet of 60 commercials, 12 of them MAN eight-leggers.

Director Darren Trinder reckons the new aggregates lei will get Leedale more heavily involved with shifting recycled building materials. With this in mind he's adding another seven MANs to the tipper fleet; all 35.414s with Thompson tipping bodies, and all on R&M contracts with Let Commercials, Mackworth.

"They'll join the others on muckaway, stonehaulage and recycled material duties," he adds.

This month's Tech Tips feature centres on one of Leedale's MAN 35.364VF eight-leggers with 70,000krnon he (lock; CM was shown round it by sharp-eyed technician Tom Scott.

Following an apprenticeship at now defunct Hooleys of Nottingham, Scott has gained experience at lveco Ford, Daf and, for the past four years, MAN dealerships. He's one of three Lex Commercials technicians (and among the first nationwide) to go for IRTEC certification.
