I saw yet another report in Commercial Motorof ownerdrivers engaged on quarry work struggling to make ends meet due to savage cuts in rates (CM 21-27 March).

When will they ever learn? if there really was any money in that game the quarry operators would have their own trucks and employ drivers direct.

Owner-drivers wedded to the quarry operator through finance deals struggle to keep their heads above water. The effect is to depress rates even more. in desperation some people are tempted to cut corners on both tachographs and maintenance, and we all know where that ends.

Surely it is time for the Traffic Commissioners to look very carefully at licence applications where the applicant is getting involved with this type of 'owner-driver plan? David S Soya (retired), Bramley, Leeds.
