• Neville Charrold of Mansfield has instructed its patent agent to look into an alleged infringement of copyright over its Ultralite tipper body design by Pannell Engineering (Andover). Neville's managing director Phil Charlesworth says that his company will not hesitate to proceed with legal action against Pannell if an infringement is proved.

• Lorry drivers who break down on trunk roads in remote areas could soon find emergency telephones installed on which to summon help. Junior Transport Minister Peter Bottomley says: "We intend to provide such telephones in a limited range of circumstances as and when funds allow." A trial of a cellular radio-based system will be undertaken later this year.

Union officials have warned traffic examiners that "what happens to the driving examiners today could well befall the traffic examiners tomorrow."
