Computer Aided Gearchanging (CAG), news editor Brian Weatherley's mechanical ability was put to the test when an airline supplying the actuator mechanism to the gearbox blew off leaving the vehicle stranded on top of a hill.
Not content with waiting for the Scania Lifeline van from West Pennine Motors, he and Scania's regional sales manager Bernie Anderson set to work with a set of rusty spanners and an all-conquering adjustable borrowed from a local farmhouse. It appears that his spanner wielding so impressed the Swedish team that they have awarded him with a training certificate. If he had been carrying his Swiss Army knife at the time, our Brian could have stripped the gearbox down and given the Scania a top engine service.
