Transport Development Group are being formed into a new sub-holding company, Express Development Services, which becomes one of the UK's top ten parcels express operators with a turnover of more than 231 million.

The move is sheduled for April 1, is designed to increase profitability and raise the company's profile in the market. EDS will employ 1,300 people and operate 468 vehicles through 34 depots.

Five companies are affected by the move: Tuffnells Parcels Express, Independent Express, Firth Distribution, District Parcels Carriers, and TPE — formerly the road services division of GEC which was purchased by TDG earlier this month (CM March 14).

Each carrier will operate autonomously under its own name, but will be able to draw on the operational, sales, promotional and financial resources of the new group.

David Allen, managing director of both Tuffnells Parcels Express and Independent Express, becomes chief executive of Express Development Services. General managers of each of the existing companies will be responsible for day to day operation, reporting directly to Allen.

Alien says: "We will immediately be exploring areas of common ground to increase levels of operational efficiency, thus maximising each company's financial performance."

There are no plans as yet to change the TOG philosophy of allowing the various trading companies to grow under their own steam. A company spokesman admits to the possibility of depots being shared by companies within Express Development Services, but he describes such savings as offering "operational, benefits at the margins of our business."
