• Girvan haulier Robert Robertson has been disqualified from holding an Operator's Licence for three years by Scottish Licensing Authority Hugh McNamara, and his licence authorising eight vehicles and two trailers has been revoked.

The LA heard of 62 convitions against Robertson and his drivers for offences including overloading, insecure loads, dangerous loads, drivers' hours offences, defective brakes, fraudulent use of an excise licence and having no excise licence. Between August to December 1986 five prohibitions were also imposed on Robertson's vehicles, with four being immediate.

Robertson said that he hauled other people's trailers, and it was impossible to have them checked for safety and weight when collecting them at docks away from his base.

McNamara said that was no excuse, and concluded that Robertson no longer met the requirements to be in good repute. His attitude towards his responsibilities was reprehensible and he found Robertson's explanations unconvincing. The ban takes effect on March 31.
