Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TVVO British firms are to manufacture a German make of piston which is-claimed to reduce oil and fuel consumption, ring-groove wear and mechanical noise, besides giving a marginal improvement in power output. Alcan Perimatic pistons will be made by Wel!worthy Ltd, of Lymington, and Automotive Engineering Ltd, of Twickenham, under licence to Alcan Alumiumwerke Nurnberg GmbH of Germany.

Expansion control of the piston skirt over its entire length by means of an embedded steel insert enables clearances to be reduced to a minimum and three rings to be used instead of the normal

five; and according to the reported view of Perkins' technicians one piston profile is suitable for a range of engines.

In a 1,000hr test of a Perkins 61 kW (81.7 bhp) naturally-aspirated vehicle engine and in a later test of the same duration of a 103 kW (138bhp) turbocharged diesel, the application of Perimatic pistons provided reductions in oil consumption of 24 per cent and 20 per cent respectively. Subject to satisfactory performance in further tests, Perkins will consider fitting a number of diesels in the company's range with Perimatic pistons.
