Main points in the Brewery Transport Advisory Committee specification for mufti-purpose unit:

Vehicle to operate on urban and motorway routes. with high motorway cruising speed and good in-town manoeuvrability. Maximum speed 70 mph fully laden, cruising speed 65 mph. 0-40mph in 55 sec with warm engine, with 20 per cent grade performance and 16.6 per cent restart performance on a dry surface.

Service brakes to be full air pressure type, disc/spring units on all axles — outboard on rear axle. Discs to be of ventilated type and capable of braking 44 tons (when uprated) at 0.6g. Anti-wheellocking as standard, and a three-line system.

Basic model to be two-axle, single-drive but capable of three-axle layout with double drive if gcw increases. ACL to be fitted; kerb weight to be not more than 5.75 tons in two-axle form.

Power steering standard, turning circle 40ft max. Not more than 5.5 turns of wheel from lock to lock, and minimal kick-back.

Engine to be direct-injection diesel of not less than 220 bhp gross for 32 tons. and not less than 8 bhp/ton if higher gcw. Simple fivespeed overdrive gearbox, single-plate clutch (may be power assisted). Hub-reduction rear axle.

Tank capacity at least 75 gal, with lines and filters placed to avoid winter waxing. All-24V electrical system. Easy-access rearmounted starter motor. Visual and audible warnings for low engine oil level, low coolant level, high temp, low tyre pressures. Thermostatic electrE fan as standard. Air-operated roof-mounted horns; 11 in headlamps; glassfibre tilt cab and fully sprung seats.

Standard equipment to include seat belt anchorages, blind-type visors, dual mirrors, arm rests, "bits" box, shelf, cigarette fighter, radio, coat hangers, reversing/coupling light, catwalk, 5th wheel, ACL, anti-corrosion treatment. All vehicles to be 'standard, with complete interchangeability of parts.
