Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

" BELIEVE every Government in this country has got a vested interest in the railway system. After spending large sums of money on it, they are trying to make the road industry as expensive to operate as the railway industry. It is a 100-year-old fight between rail and road."

-Mr_ J. M. Birch, chairman of the Passenger Vehicle Operators' Association, made this statement at the annual meeting of the East Midland Area recently. Mr. F. A. Walker, national secretary, said that it was only the lack of uniformity among licensing authorities that enabled the industry to. be • successful. The industry otherwise • would be at a standstill.

• Reference was made by the area chairman, Mr. F. :Broomfield, to the " serious time tag" between' the dates of applications to increase, fares, and their coming into force. ,The Fast Midland Licensing Authority, Mr. J. SHOP STEWARDS-WANT

STRONGER ACTION

BECAUSE they considered the Transport and General Workers' Union's plan to resist denationalization of road haulage to be unsatisfactory, 130 shop stewards from R.H.E. depots in London are reported to have walked out from a T.G.W.U. delegate meeting called in London last week.

'rue meeting ,was attended by the" stewards and by about an equal number of union branch secretaries and chairmen.

One delegate asked that any committee appointed to look after the interests • of R.H.E.-employed members and to fight denationalization should be elected by branches and not appointed from above.
