Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Trading for light CVs at Manheim Auctions shows no sign of easing as buyers fipt over limited stock, says commercial vehicle sales director Alex Wright, but desire for ageing stock is wearing thin.

Atier battling with rising prices over the past five months — a knock-on effect of the shortage of late-year, low-mileage stock — some buyers are becoming reluctant to continue paying above the odds for run-of-the-mill models, preferring to seek out rare or outof-the-ordinary vehicles instead.

That said, Manheim is still seeing plenty of demand for mid-age and mileage stock in the £3,00046,000 bracket. The liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) market is the one sector where prices are unpredictable.

Exempt from paying the congestion charge, LPG vehicles are becoming increasingly sought after at Manheim's Colchester site, its nearest one to London's congestion charge zone. A good example of the growing demand there is a 45,000-mile Ford Connect T210 1.8 Petrol/LPG 115PS 0453 plate which, at £6,100, achieved a very surprising £1,275 above book price.

Although not every offering will make such strong money, this shows that there is a good market developing for LPG vehicles in specific areas. It is easy to predict what will happen when a dropside or tipper comes to auction — they are like gold dust.

When one does appear, it attracts a lot of attention and consequently achieves a high price, such as a recent example sold at Manheim's Gloucester branch. Eight bidders competed to secure the Ford Transit 350 90PS 45,000-mile dropside 02registered,02-plated,12ft body; it sold for £1,600 above list price at £7,300.

In the car-derived sector, rare Escorts are also selling for incredible prices; with 63,000 miles on the clock an 01-registered Y-plate Escort 55 1.8D sold for £1,475,making £225 above book price. The Citroen Berlingo is one of the few vans around in numbers and, although as popular as ever, the increased choice means sales prices are falling to more reasonable levels.

In the panel van sector in general, SWB models remain a popular choice. LWBs are also in demand but as there are a lot to choose from at the moment, condition, mileage and colour are all affecting prices. MWB models, particularly low-roof versions, are really struggling to sell.

Among small panel vans the Ford Connect in SWB and LWII versions remains popular. A good example is aT220 LWB model, sold at Manheim's Haydock branch recently for £700 above book price. Citroen's Dispatch and Peugeot's Expert always perform well at auction and the tidier examples are achieving well above book prices.

The Mercedes-Benz Vitois a star among the sub-3.0-tonne panel van sector.A number of the new shapes in varying colours are coming through the halls, attracting a lot of attention from buyers. The Colchester branch recently sold an averagecondition Vito 115CDI, which made 106% of the list price.

Roof damage Volkswagen's liansporter is also in strong demand with the Vauxhall Vivaro and Renault Trafic still selling well. However, several vehicles have appeared with roof damage recently, which affected sale prices by up toil ,500.

Although there is a good choice of 3.0-tonne-plus panel vans coming up for auction, buyers will pay high prices for the right vehicles. Manheim's Haydock branch saw 10 Transit 350 Jumbo. 155hp,55-plate ex-rental vans in tidy condition. with mileages varying from 15.000 to 27,000, achieving at least £2,000 above book price.

With the shortage of the new Transit continuing, these high prices look set to continue. Cheaper alternatives for buyers in the sector are the Fiat Ducat° and Citroen Relay. Sale prices for these vehicles have also risen recently, but they are still a good buy.

Among 4x4s. Manheim has seen a few Mitsubishi L200 models coming through its auction halls, with buyers opting for those of a good colour and high spec. A rare new shape L200 Animal in silver sold for £15,200 recently, £800 above book price. The Ford Ranger is also in strong demand —and again. spec and colour affects the sale price.•
