A NORTH YORKSHIRE operator who ran his fleet in a "dangerous condition" and failed to appear at a public inquiry has had his 0-licence revoked. Offences included a wheel-loss incident and replacing a lost fuel cap with a plastic hag.

Scarborough-based Peter Rogers, trading as PRS Contractors, had been called before NorthEastern Traffic Commissioner Tom Macartney at a Leeds disciplinary inquiry but ignored the request.

Vehicle examiner Bob Crampton said that over the last five years, a variation notice as well as four immediate and two delayed prohibitions (two of which were S-marked, indicating a serious lapse in maintenance) had been issued to Rogers' vehicles. These included an immediate prohibition issued to a. light CV following a wheel-loss incident.

When a vehicle and trailer were stopped in a check. it was found that the trailer brakes had been disconnected: the driver said they had been like that for some time. The fuel filler cap was missing and had been replaced by a purple plastic bag stuffed into the fuel tank. In addition, a mud wing was gouging into the tyre. The TC said the photographs of that vehicle and trailer were "frankly shocking" and the polythene bag was like a coloured flag saying 'stop me'.

In reply to the TC, Crampton said the wheel loss had occurred because of badly maintained wheel Rogers had been convicted of overloading in September 2005 and it appeared that those convictions had not been notified. The TC said he was "terribly concerned" about Rogers' ability to run vehicles.
