Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I READ WITH interest articles on the VED rebate for Euro-5 compliant vehicles and thought I would do a bit of digging.

I started by phoning the DfT helpline. The operative who answered was polite but had no idea what! was talking about, and helpfully suggested 1 phone the Vosa helpline.

At Vosa I explained what I needed to know and the operative listened intently to the question. When there was a pause she asked:"What's a VED?" I explained and she knew what to do: send me to the HM Revenue and Customs helpline.

So! called HMRC: the phone was answered with the usual 'press one for...' etc.! decided that the best option was option three: non-VAT issues. Again I explained my query; the operator replied that this was the VAT office and perhaps I needed the revenue section.

I knew this wouldn't be any use and said that perhaps the DVLA might be more useful. With this she said:"Oh! I have the DVLA's helpline."

So 1 called the DVLA.Again the operative listened intently to my question, then asked if I would hold while she asked the question. A couple of minutes later she was back."'" asked all four managers on duty today and none of them know what you're talking about; could! take the question again?"

So! repeated the question while she wrote it down. She said she would pass it on and hopefully would have an answer later that day (15 Jun e I.Just after 3pm she called back, advised me that she wasn't able to answer my question yetand asked if she could ring back on Monday. So! am none the wiser. And the question that so taxed all these government offices?

-Could you tell me whether, ill bought a new Euro-5 truck today fitted with the OBD2 detection system,! would qualify for aVED rebate?"! believe the simple answer is -nounless I register the truck after 1 October.

Why? The point of the OBD2 is it can tell that the vehicle is being operated correctly, so I would have thought Vosa and the DVLA would want OBD2-fitted Euro-5 vehicles on the road as soon as possible. Probably time to start a convoluted conspiracy theory if only I could think of one Name withheld bye-mail
