AN additional vehicle for livestock transport was granted, at Inverness last week, to Mr. Henry Lumsden, farmer and sheep dealer, of Toab, Orkney, carrying on business as a livestock haulier at Thurso. Mr. Martin J. Tustin has been appointed a director of Dowty Group Ltd. M. Ivan Dehois, of Belgium, has been appointed transport director of the High Authority of the European Coal and Steel Community. M. Debois, 48, has been with the E.C.S.C.'s transport directorate for some years.

Mr. A. R. Magee was re-elected chairman of the Bristol Centre of the Institute of Traffic Administration at the annual general meeting.

Col. W. H. Slack, who is transport officer of the North Western Gas Board, has been appointed Aide-de-Camp (Army Emergency Reserve) to the Queen. Mr. V. C. Mills has been appointed a director of VW Motors Ltd. Mr. Mills joined the company in January of this year as general manager and continues to serve in that capacity.

To mark the completion of 10 years' association with the Lorry Driver of the Year contest a plaque was presented to Mr. M. C. Hardaker at Leeds last week. As the competition has grown in size Mr. Hardaker has travelled extensively to act as steward and to advise other areas. He is now moving from Yorkshire to Worcestershire, so that in future seasons he is likely to be officiating at the Southern rounds.

Mr. George H. Savill, for many years service director of Carmo (1929) Ltd., recently retired after 34 years' service. He joined •the company as a mechanic from one of London's pirate bus companies. During his career he has been very closely associated with the company's main supplier, Vauxhall Motors.

At the annual general meeting which followed the annual luncheon of the Maudslay Society last week, Mr. J. Foster Petree became president in succession to Maj. Maudslay.

Mr. W. Dodds has been re-elected chairman of the national council of the Passenger Vehicle Operators Association and Mr. J. T. Steel and Mr. E. A. Lainson have been re-elected as vicechairmen. Area chairmen have been elected as follows: Mr. A. Skill (East Midland); Mr. W. H. Austin (West Midland); Mr. T. S. Ireland (North Western); Mr. S. G. Bellamy (Western); Mr. M. A. Hargreaves (Yorkshire); Mr. W. 3. Lacey (London and Home Counties); Mr. A. E. Brewer (South Wales) and Mr. W. Dodds (Scotland).

Mr. Liam Hunter has been appointed public relations officer of the Rootes Group. Formerly chief press officer responsible for overseas press liaison, Mr. Hunter joined Rootes seven years ago He succeeds Mr. John Wilcox, who has resigned to join International Wool Secretariat. The Minister of Transport has appointed Mr. E. Brown, Cllr. E. H. Gough and Mr. R. P. Roberts as members of the Transport Users' Consultative Committee for Wales and Monmouthshire. Mr. Brown was, until his retirement, director and commercial manager of Guest, Keen and Nettlefolds (South Wales) Ltd.

Mr. Arnold Stone, deputy chief transport officer, Leeds City Transport, Mr. Clifford Nurse, traffic superintendent, Coventry Corporation Transport, and Mr. Francis Murray, chief administrative assistant, Halifax Passenger Transport department, have been short-listed for the post of chief traffic officer for Leeds City Transport department.

Mr. A. J. H. Gibb is retiring at the end of June after 35 years with The Union Cartage Co. Ltd. For the whole of this time he has been engineer-in-charge of the tractor and trailer section. Starting in 1928, when the fleet consisted of horsedrawn vehicles and Foden Steam Wagons, he was responsible for designing and building in his own workshops the first motor tractor fleet, some of which are still in service.

In addition to Mr. H. B. Phillips, whose election as chairman was announced recently, the T.R.T.A.'s new vehicles committee has the following members: Mr. L. J. Cotton of Unilever Ltd., Mr. F. K. Davey, previously associated with Alcan Industries' North America and West Africa associate companies, has been appointed London area director.
