A Four cylinder 52 h.p. Agricultural Machine Weighing Approximately 3 Tons and Capable of Speeds from 2 to 4 m.p.h.

/TAKING its first public appearance in this country at ilVithe Royal' Show at Newcastle an entirety new tractor has been added to the range of renowned agricultural and industrial machines marketed by the International Har.-vester Co., of Great Britain, Ltd., 259, City Road, London, .E.C.1. Designated the W1?-49, the new Model is powered by a compression ignition engine and is Of the wheeled :type, being available with -steel spUdded rims or with pneu

Accordingly, • thd WD 40 represents a new departure, . it :being the first wheeled oiler to have been produced by the company. Described as of the 'four-plough; size, the WD-40 weighs just under 3 tons1-Cwt., and its engine is rated at 52 h.p. This has four cylinders. and is of the solid -injection type with a pre combustion chamber : The cylinder dimensions are :.—Bore; •ft ins., and stroke 61 ins., which give a total displacement of about 453 Cubic iris. it employs a compression ratio of 15 to 1, having an actual cylinder compression of -500, lb per sq. in The governed speed is 1,100 r.p.m. There are removable cylinder liners' and.the'cMnkshaft runs in five steel backed bearings. Injection is by a McCormick -Deering pump having variable timing, and governed for a •maxiinum speed (running light) of 1,256 r.p.m. and a ininiminn idling speed of 700 r:p.m. The govérno is adjustable from the driver's seat.

Starting-up is effected by an ingenious deyice. which temporarily converts the unit to a petrol engine, compression being lowered and a magneto and carburetter • being brought into operation. The change-over back to oil and compression ignition is automatic.' Provision is made for carrying 31 gallons of oil fuel and a gallon of petrol.

The transmission incorporates a dry-disc 14-in, singleplate clutch, with clutch brake, a three-speed gearbox, giving overall ratios of 42 to 1, 43.8 to 1 and 62.4 to 1 forward, and 69.6 to 1 reverse, reduction gears and dif

ferential. Nickel-chromicliurn steel is largely used for gearwheeli, the teeth are precision cut .ball and straight and tapered-roller -bearings are widely employed, and rawhide Or felt oil retainers 'are provided at all necessary. points. There is a belt pulley on the off side, the diameter and width Of which are 164 ins. and 9 ins.' respectively ; it runs

at 590 r.p,m. poWer-take-off running at 560 r.p.m. is also available. Of the contracting-band type; a hand-con trolled brake operates on -the transmission. , • A girder-section rocking axle supports the weight at the front, its stub axles having tapered:roller swivel-pin thrust . i bearings. Steering s by worm and gear, and follows auto mobile' practice. The rear axle is of the semi-floating type. A single casting forms the main frame. The dimensions of the front wheels are 34 ins. by Sins. They are provided with 11-in. skid rings. The rear wheels are 50 ins. in diameter and 12 ins. wide. Each is equipped with 32 6-in. by 31-in. spade lugs. Speeds of 3.9 m.p.h., 3.4 m.p.h., and 2.6 m.p.h, are afforded by the forward ratios. •

Noteworthy, features of a detail nature include a gravity. fed fuel pump, which supplies the injection pumps. the incorporation of no fewer than seven filters and a water trap in the fuel line, and alarge Donaldson oil-type air cleaner.
